GATINEAU, November 21, 2017 – Highlights of the Economic Impact Report submitted by KPMG and the Tourism Survey Report conducted by SEGMA[i], for the horticultural exhibition MOSAICANADA150/Gatineau2017 that took place in Jacques-Cartier Park this summer in Gatineau, were released today by the executive management team of Mosaicultures Internationales de Montréal.

MOSAICANADA150/Gatineau2017 was an outstanding success – welcoming 1 317 200 visitors between June 30th and the October 15th, largely surpassing the projected number of 800,000 visitors. The spending generated from organizing the event and from visitors attending the exhibition generated $28 million in the Ottawa-Gatineau region and $32.5 million in additional spending in the province of Québec.

The overall project of MOSAÏCANADA150/Gatineau 2017 also sustained 356 jobs (FTEs) and generated $18.4 million in added value in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. At the provincial level in Québec, the impact is even higher, in terms of employment (371) and the added value ($20.5 million).

The KPMG report also noted additional impacts as a result of this high-profile event, more specifically tourism impacts on the region. Being one of the signature events of Canada’s 150th, MOSAICANADA150/Gatineau2017 contributed significantly to the interest in the celebrations in Ottawa-Gatineau, to the enhancement of the region’s tourism profile and its visibility on the international stage.

The attraction power of the exhibition is certainly a highlight of the SEGMA report - 70% of the day-travellers and tourists came to Gatineau specifically to visit MOSAICANADA150/Gatineau 2017. High participation rates are attributed to the fact that 2017 will have been exceptional for the overall tourism industry in the Outaouais. Regional tourism stakeholders forecast that by the end of the year, the region will have seen visitor numbers jump by one million in 2017, a 25% increase from previous years. Hotel occupancy rates have also seen a significant increase compared to 2016.

Many events will have simultaneously contributed to heightened visibility of the National Capital Region at the international level, the nature and scope of the installations of MOSAÏCANADA150 / Gatineau 2017 will certainly have been amongst the most significant.
